Saussurea obvallata or Brahma Kamal is native to the Himalayas, Uttarakhand, Southwest China and Northern Burma. The flowers have both male and female organs and bloom from July to August. The local names are Kon and Kapfu too.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma is seen sitting on a pink flower resembling lotus. Some believe that the lotus he is seen sitting on sprung from the belly button of Lord Vishnu. According to other folklore, the lotus, which Brahma is holding in his hand, is the lotus.
It is said to fulfill wishes, restore lives and give spiritual enlightenment to people who see it blooming. Even modern science recognizes the medicinal value of the flower.
